Callicarpa dichotoma

Purple Beautyberry

Deciduous Shrub

Callicarpa dichotoma, commonly called beautyberry, is an arching deciduous shrub that is mostly grown for its contribution to the late fall and winter garden. Small, inconspicuous pink to lavender summertime flowers develop into showy purple berries by late summer. The berries remain a feature for several months.  In fall, the berries displayed against its yellowing foliage is quite striking. After leaf drop, the berries continue to cling to its bare branches until they peter out sometime around early- to mid-winter. It is best grown in full sun for the heaviest fruit production—the number one reason to grow this shrub.  The beautyberry bush blooms on new wood, so it can be pruned in early spring. Some gardeners cut it back to about 6" in early spring to maintain a compact, bushy plant that flowers well. In cold climates the stems may dieback to the ground but will resprout from the base. Best cross-pollination and resulting fruit occurs when it's planted in groups.

It's not as widely grown as it's more common cousin, Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii 'Profusion' here in the Portland area, but I hope to see it used more regularly. Its berries are slightly less showy. However, I believe that the overall form of the plant is more attractive and graceful.
