Cercidiphyllum japonicum

Katsura

Deciduous Tree

"Outstanding Qualities
Katsura is one of the most elegant trees available. The new spring leaves emerge with a reddish-purple cast and quickly take on a lovely, blue-green color through the summer. In fall the foliage turns bright butter-yellow with orange and apricot tones. As the leaves fall, they release a fragrance of strawberries and cotton candy. Its roots are not aggressive and it is an easy tree to garden under.

Culture Notes
Katsura grows best in rich well-drained soil. Fall color and growth is best in full sun or light to open shade. It appreciates regular summer watering during dry spells, especially if the tree is in full sun or less than ideal soils. In areas with hot summers it is better grown with protection from the hot afternoon sun."—Great Plant Picks
